(B3rd VLDB Workshop on Secure Data Management
(B- with special session on security and privacy in healthcare -
(Bhttp://www.hitech-projects.com/sdm-workshop/sdm06.html
(B
(BSeptember 10-11, 2006
(BThe Convention and Exhibition Center (COEX)
(BSeoul, Korea
(BIn conjunction with 32nd International Conference on Very Large Databases
(Bhttp://aitrc.kaist.ac.kr/~vldb06/
(B
(BThe 3rd SDM workshop builds upon the success of the first two workshops,
(Bwhich were organized in conjunction with VLDB 2004 in Toronto, Canada and
(BVLDB 2005 in Trondheim, Norway.
(B
(B
(BMotivation
(BAlthough cryptography and security techniques have been around for quite
(Bsome time, emerging technologies such as ubiquitous computing and ambient
(Bintelligence that exploit increasingly interconnected networks, mobility
(Band personalization, put new requirements on security with respect to
(Bdata management. As data is accessible anytime anywhere, according to
(Bthese new concepts, it becomes much easier to get unauthorized data
(Baccess. Furthermore, it becomes simpler to collect, store, and search
(Bpersonal information and endanger people's privacy. Therefore, research
(Bin the area of secure data management is of growing importance,
(Battracting attention of both the data management and security research
(Bcommunities The interesting problems range from traditional ones
(Bsuch as, access control (with all variations, like dynamic,
(Bcontext-aware, role-based), database security (e.g. efficient database
(Bencryption schemes, search over encrypted data, etc.), privacy
(Bpreserving data mining to controlled sharing of data.
(B
(BThis year, we will continue with a tradition to have a special session
(Bdevoted to secure data management in healthcare. Data security and
(Bprivacy issue are traditionally important in the medical domain.
(BHowever, recent developments and increasing deployment of IT in
(Bhealthcare such as the introduction of electronic health records
(Band extramural applications in the personal health care domain,
(Bpose new challenges towards the protection of medical data. In contrast
(Bto other domains, such as financial, which can absorb the cost of the
(Babuse of the system, healthcare cannot. Once sensitive information about
(Bindividual's health problems is uncovered and social damage is done,
(Bthere is no way to revoke the information or to restitute the individual.
(BIn addition to this, the medical field has some other specific
(Bcharacteristics, such as long-term value of medical data and
(Bflexibility with respect to, on one hand confidentiality, and
(Bon the other hand availability of medical data in the case of emergency.
(B
(B
(BAim
(BThe aim of the workshop is to bring together people from the security
(Bresearch community and data management research community in order to
(Bexchange ideas on the secure management of data. This year an additional
(Bspecial session will be organized with the focus on secure and private
(Bdata management in healthcare. The workshop will provide forum for
(Bdiscussing practical experiences and theoretical research efforts that
(Bcan help in solving the critical problems in secure data management.
(BAuthors from both academia and industry are invited to submit papers
(Bpresenting novel research on the topics of interest (see below).
